Sedation at North Texas Smiles
As a board-certified pediatric dentist and dad of four energetic kids, I know firsthand how dental visits can feel overwhelming – for little ones and parents alike. I’ve seen the worry in a child’s eyes during an exam, the way a routine cleaning can turn into tears, or how past experiences make some kids freeze at the thought of opening wide. I’ve also been the parent sitting in the chair with my own children, wanting nothing more than for them to feel safe, calm, and cared for.
That’s why we offer safe, gentle sedation options at North Texas Smiles. Our goal is never to rush or force care – it’s to create positive experiences that help your child build trust in dentistry for life. Whether it’s a simple check-up for an anxious toddler or more involved treatment for a child with special needs, we tailor sedation to fit their age, personality, and needs so they can get the healthy smile they deserve without fear or stress.

Our Sedation Options
We provide two main types of sedation, both chosen carefully for pediatric safety and comfort:
We’ve seen life-changing results: kids who once refused to open their mouths now come back happily for check-ups, and parents breathe a huge sigh of relief knowing their child received gentle, thorough care without trauma.
Safety Is Always First
Every sedation case at North Texas Smiles follows strict pediatric guidelines. We complete a thorough medical history review, discuss options openly with you, and only proceed when it’s the right fit. Our office is equipped with state-of-the-art monitoring, emergency preparedness, and a team trained in pediatric advanced life support. Whether nitrous or IV, your child is never left alone – we’re right there with them, watching closely and keeping you updated every step.

It’s Not “One Size Fits All”
Sedation isn’t for every child or every visit. Many of our patients do beautifully with our tell-show-do approach, positive reinforcement, and child-friendly environment. But when anxiety, medical needs, or treatment complexity make traditional care difficult, sedation opens the door to the healthy mouth your child needs. We never push it – we partner with you to decide what’s best.
Myths & Realities
1
“Sedation is too risky for kids”
When done by trained pediatric specialists with proper monitoring, it’s extremely safe – safer than the untreated dental problems that can lead to pain, infection, or emergency visits.
2
“They’ll be out of it for days”
Nitrous wears off in minutes; IV recovery is usually quick, with most kids bouncing back the same day or next.
3
“It means my child is ‘difficult”
Not at all – some kids just need extra help, just like some need glasses to see clearly. We’re here to make it easier for everyone.
